“HOW ARE YOU DOING?”

“Dear Friend,

I hope all is well with you and that you are healthy in body as you are strong in Spirit.”

This was Apostle John’s opening statement in his letter to Gaius. It appears they had a good relationship. Gaius was a friend and faithful member of the church in the province. He was committed to providing accommodations and hospitality to the traveling preachers; more like the ministry of helps – a ministry that requires voluntary, exceptional and selfless service, even in the midst of uncomfortable situations.

Selfless service is one of the attributes of true servant-leadership. It is the ability to show genuine care and concern for the wellbeing of the people around you. It involves offering support and participating in activities that enrich the lives of other people.

We all have ‘Gaiuses’ around us; individuals working behind the scenes, some unnoticed and easily forgotten. Some do not receive the same kindness, generosity and grace that they share with the world around them. Everyone assumes they are doing well. Some hide behind the mask of their positive energy, making it difficult for anyone to read in between the lines.

As I was praying a few days ago, this verse came to mind and I felt a gentle nudge to check in on some of the ‘Gaiuses’ I know; the ones who keep giving their time, resources, knowledge and expertise, while dealing with internal and external challenges, without expecting reward in return.

So this is for you, dear friend.

How are you doing, physically? Are you getting enough sleep, rest and breaks? How does your body feel each morning when you wake up and each night before you go to bed? I hope you are taking care of your physical wellbeing.

How are you doing, mentally? Are you stressed, tired, anxious or tense? Is your mind at rest at all times? Maybe some of the time? I hope you are coping well.

How are you doing, emotionally?  Do you have a safe space where you can be vulnerable? Are the important relationships in your life working? How are your conversations with your loved ones and colleagues at work? I hope you are in a good place.

How are you doing, financially? Are you in debt? Struggling to make ends meet? Working extra hours and shifts to cover the bills? Have you taken on more than you can handle or are you living within your earnings? I hope you are managing well.

How are you doing, spiritually? When was the last time you had a conversation with God, flipped through the pages of the Bible, read a verse or two or a full chapter, went on a retreat or spent time of fellowship and community bonding with your fellow believers and tribe? I hope you are growing and flourishing the way God wants you to.

How are you doing, socially? Have you isolated yourself, avoiding conversations with people because you are tired of being attacked, judged or misunderstood? Are you hiding from the world or withdrawn completely due to the increase in bitterness and negativity? I hope you have not let go of your amazing, authentic self.

Dear caring friend,

I may not know what is going on with you, but I feel a quick check-in is a good place to start.

Borrowing Apostle John’s words, “I hope all is well with you and that you are healthy in body as you are strong in spirit”.

Take care of yourself and remember that your safety and well-being is your responsibility.
